Caption:
Under a low magnification of 15X, this image depicted three colonies of Group-B, Neisseria meningitidis bacteria, which had been cultivated on a lactose-containing solid medium, revealing that no differential fermentation had taken place, which would have produced an acidic environment, turning the indicator yellow. Neisseria spp. produce acid from carbohydrates by oxidation, not fermentation. N. meningitidis oxidizes glucose and maltose, but not lactose or sucrose.
