Captured in Viet Nam, this image depicted a medial view of the right foot of a septicemic plague patient. The foot displayed blanching of the distal foot and toes, indicative of a compromised blood flow through the foot’s microvasculature, due to the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, and its ability to induce disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and hence, blood clots in the body’s microvasculature.
