Caption:
The young Vietnamese child depicted here, had been infected with the plague bacterium, Yersinia pestis, after having been bitten by an infected flea vector. In this view, the child’s left arm had been lifted upward, exposing her left axilla, and in doing so, revealed an axillary bubo, or swelling of an affected, inflamed lymph node. See PHIL 20548, for another view of this young patient’s condition.
