This image depicted what is known as a fundoscopic view of the retina, or the back of the right eye. Note that the retinal vessels appeared to be emanating from the right, out of the brightly-lit optic cup, indicating the attachment of the optic nerve to the rear of the eyeball. Of importance, were the pathologic changes made visible in the retinal tissues displayed as blotchy, lighter areas, representing yellow, hard exudates due to what was diagnosed as a case of hypertensive retinopathy.
