This was a 22-year-old male agricultural worker, who had been infected by Schistosoma mansoni flat worms, and was in the stage of disease referred to as the compensated form of hepatosplenic schistosomiasis (HSS), which begins in the early-invasive phase, and progresses to the phase of the disease involving gross vascular involvement. You will note that the patient’s abdomen had been marked, indicating the limits of his ribcage, and the enlargement of his spleen on his left side.
