Description: Caption:
Captured prior to beginning any treatment, this image depicted a right anterior-oblique view of the upper body of a male patient, who presented with a fungal infection of the face and neck that had produced an open, ulcerative wound below the right angle of his mouth. This is the same patient seen in PHIL 20423, a view that revealed another ulcerated cutaneous lesion on the man’s left inframandibular region. The infection, known as paracoccidioidomycosis, which is also known as Lutz-Splendore-Almeida disease, or Brazilian blastomycosis, was caused by the fungal organism, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis.
