This photomicrograph of a thick film human blood smear, extracted from a patient with a malarial infection, revealed the presence of a number of lightly-staining, ring-staged, Plasmodium falciparum trophozoites, amongst much cellular debris. All that was visible of the rings, were their chromatin dots.
