This photomicrograph of a thick film human blood smear, extracted from a patient with a malarial infection, revealed the presence of a Plasmodium falciparum gametocyte, which was surrounded by cellular debris. The ill-defined appearance of the blue background, meant that the red blood cells (RBCs) had undergone partial fixation.
