This photomicrograph of a thin film human blood smear, extracted from a patient with a malarial infection, revealed the presence of a growing, ring-staged, Plasmodium malariae trophozoite, inside an oval red blood cell (RBC), surrounded by lightly staining cytoplasm. A small quantity of pigment granules were also visible inside the RBC.
