Caption:
This photomicrograph of a thin film human blood smear, extracted from a patient with a malarial infection, revealed the presence of an immature, Plasmodium ovale schizont, which was contained inside a single, irregularly-shaped red blood cell (RBC). Note the chromatin masses contained inside the RBC, which would go on to become merozoites, as well as numerous Schüffner's dots.
