The Nigerian child pictured here, displayed a scarred lesion of the right cheek, which was determined to be a condition known as cancrum oris, also referred to as noma, fusospirochetal gangrene, necrotizing ulcerative stomatitis, and stomatitis gangrenosa. See PHIL 20297, for a view of this child’s condition at its onset, depicting a through-and-through lesion, which had been replaced here, by scar tissue.
