Depicted here, was a Nigerian infant, who displayed signs of marasmus, which in this case was drying, scaly skin, and hypopigmentation. Also note the lateral bowing of the infants shin bones, or tibiae. Marasmus involves the inadequate intake of nutritional energy in all forms, including protein, which differentiates it from kwashiorkor, which involves an extreme reduction in protein intake in one’s diet.
