This image depicted a right lateral view of the lower body of a young Nigerian child, who had presented to a clinical setting with a condition known as marasmic kwashiorkor. Note the overall wasting of the patient’s body mass, sloughing of dead skin from the hips and legs, and the subcutaneous wounds exposed by the missing skin, all of which are symptoms of this extreme case of nutritional deficiency.
