This historic image, from the summer of 1966, was captured during an Aedes aegypti mosquito eradication operation, which was being carried out in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This public health field worker was in the process of examining the contents of an aluminum pale, which was acting as a mosquito breeding site, providing the insects with a watery incubator for their eggs. The man’s uniform bore the patch on its left shoulder, which read, S.C. State Board of Health, Aedes aegypti Eradication Program.
