This September 2013 image, depicted members of the oral cholera vaccine (OCV) campaign team, in the process of surveying the rural lands of the Haitian commune of Cerca Carvajal. Before teams would start to visit the houses, in order to interview residents, the field coordinators delineated the area to be surveyed, to ensure that interviewers were in the right location. In this picture, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Medical Epidemiologist, Rania Tohme, MD, MPH, was checking the boundaries of the selected area to be surveyed with the field coordinator. In rural areas, teams had to walk for hours, under the hot sun, through different kinds of terrain, to merely move from one house to the next.
