Captured in the Empandeni ward, of the Mangwe district, in Matebeleland South province of Zimbabwe, July 6, 2012, this image depicted Zimbabwean Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) resident, Dr. Pugie Chimberengwa, and two assistants, in the process of collecting members of the native aquatic snail population, in order to test for the presence of Schistosoma type parasitic worms in this watery environment. This investigation was in response to a schistosomiasis outbreak in this area. The FETP trains workers on the ground to help countries build sustainable capacity for detecting and responding to health threats. The program develops in-country expertise, so that disease outbreaks can be detected locally and prevented from spreading.
