This image depicts a close view of an adult patient’s mouth highlighting the patient’s teeth and gums. The patient presented with what are known as scorbutic gums, due to a vitamin C deficiency, which is one of the symptoms of scurvy. Note the swelling and inflammation of the gum tissue between the teeth, referred to as the gingival interdental papillae. See PHIL 3998, for another view of this patient’s inflamed gums. Scorbutic gums involves inflammation of the gums, or gingivitis, as well as gingival hemorrhages due to the breakdown of capillary components of the gingival vascular system.
