Entitled, “A Nepalese Mother and Her Infant”, this image was captured by CDC Epidemiologist, Elizabeth Luman, PhD, who is the Associate Chief of Science for the International Laboratory Branch of the Global AIDS Program (GAP). The picture was taken during a national household survey in Nepal, to measure vaccination coverage. The survey was conducted to document whether children, like the one pictured here, had received the necessary vaccinations to protect them from vaccine-preventable diseases, and to identify pockets of need for further follow-up services. The picture earned Dr. Luman a tie for the Second Place award in the 2010 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of “International People”.
