Entitled, “Global AIDS Program Work in Sudan”, this image depicts a little boy about to drink from a murky pond. This child was one of 130,000 refugees from the Ethiopian/Eritrean civil war, living in a refugee camp in rural eastern Sudan. Here, villagers wash camels, water cattle, and bathe. The photo was taken during a surveillance survey on HIV, a joint effort among the United Nation High Commission for Refugees, the Sudan National AIDS Program, and GAP. The photographer, Alison Smith, with the Global AIDS Program (GAP), Epidemiology and Strategic Information Branch, in NCHHSTP, had tied for the First Place award in the 2008 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of “International Programs”.
