Entitled, “Tsunami in Sumatra”, this image depicts an Indonesian midwife, as she was entering birth data in a new log book at University Hospital, in Banda Ache, after the Sumatra tsunami of 2004. The photo was captured by CAPT. Kitty MacFarlane, N, MN, MPH, a nurse consultant with the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP), and a Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS). CAPT. MacFarlane was the lead midwife in the WHO Collaboration Center for Reproductive Health, as well as the Team Commander for the second USPHS team deployed to Sumatra for disaster relief. This was one of two First Place winners in the 2006 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of “International: People”.
