Entitled, “Experimental Coal Mine”, this image was created by Chad Hutson, Team Leader of the Health Communications Team’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR). The NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine, located at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Lab, is a multi-purpose, underground mine facility used for the development and evaluation of new health and safety interventions for mineworkers. In the image, mine safety and health researchers stand at the entry of the experimental coal mine. This photo earned Chad the First Place award in the 2013 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of “Domestic People and Programs”.
