Entitled, “Transmission Assessment Surveys in Tanzania”, this image was created by CDC ORISE Fellow, Alaine Kathryn Knipes. Here, Zaina Mauma, a technician with Tanzania’s Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) Elimination Program, is testing school-aged children for LF during a WHO-recommended transmission assessment survey (TAS). The LF-endemic area became eligible for TAS after successfully completing more than five years of annual mass drug administration (MDA). The district passed the TAS, indicating transmission of LF had been achieved, and MDA could be stopped. This photo earned Alaine one of her three First Place awards in the 2014 CDC Connects Annual Public Health in Action Photo Contest, in the category of “International People”.
