This image highlighted the left palm of an infant, held steady by the hands of an adult, which displayed a developmental abnormality known as a simian crease (arrowhead), or simian line, which is a palmar crease that is formed upon fusion of the proximal, and distal creases during embryonic development. In this particular instance, this patient’s mother had used the anticonvulsant, trimethadione (brand name Tridione^®), while pregnant, causing this malformation, as well as others affecting the child’s face, ears, and heart, a condition known as fetal trimethadione syndrome. The simian crease is also seen in in the chromosomal abnormality known as trisomy 21, or Down syndrome.
