This young Indian patient exhibited symptoms indicative of a case of lepromatous leprosy, caused by the bacterium, Mycobacterium leprae. Note the patient’s loss of eyebrow hair. The newer World Health Organization (WHO) standards, categorizes lepromatous leprosy, as multibacillary (MB) leprosy, and is characterized by generalized, or diffuse, involvement of the skin. Under microscopic examination, a thickening of the peripheral nerves will be evident, and MB leprosy has the potential to involve other organs including the eyes, nose, testes, and bone.
