This image depicted a close view of the palm of a patient’s right hand, revealing a well demarcated, infiltrated area, which proved to be due to the tubercular form of leprosy, or Hansen’s disease (HD), which was caused by the bacterium, Mycobacterium leprae. This form of the disease is characterized by the presence of asymmetrically distributed solitary skin lesions, and under the newer World Health Organization (WHO) standards, this type of leprosy is classified as paucibacillary (PB) leprosy.
