Captured during January-February, 1975, this historic image depicts the shrine of the Bodhi tree, adjacent to the Mahabodhi Temple, on the religious site known as Bodh Gaya, located in the East India State of Bihar. This is believed to be the tree beneath which Gautama Buddha is said to have obtained Enlightenment, otherwise known as Bodhimandala. The photograph was captured by a Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Bureau of State Services staff member, during one of the smallpox immunization-related trips to that region of the world.
