Using a technique known as immunofluorescence, this photomicrograph of a cell culture specimen, treated with conjugated herpes simplex virus type-2 (HSV-2) antiserum, revealed the presence of the herpes virus antigen. Using monoclonal antibodies, immunofluorescence microscopy can identify the presence of the body’s antigenic response to such viral organisms with higher sensitivity than conventional microscopy.
