Caption:
This illustration, depicting a photomicrograph of a Gram-stained urethral exudate specimen, revealed the presence of extracellular, Gram-positive cocci, and Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacilli, but no intra-, or extracellular Gram-negative diplococci, leading to a diagnosis of nongonococcal urethritis. See PHIL 4086, for an example of what one would see in a case of gonococcal urethritis.
