This image from 1972, depicted a man who had presented to a medical clinic, and was seated before a nurse, who was in the process of listening to the patient, and recording his responses in what is known as a patient’s history and physical, or H&P. The man seemed to be pointing out to the nurse a problem he was having with his right thumb, particularly, the area of the thumb’s metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint.
