Under a magnification of 400X, this photomicrograph revealed the presence of Actinomyces israelii bacteria, which had been discovered in this cervicovaginal smear specimen, that had been processed using a fluorescent antibody (FA) staining technique. When growing as filaments, these Gram-positive rods are often said to exhibit a dust bunny appearance.
