Caption:
Captured during the necropsy of a deceased Rhesus monkey, Macaca mulatta, this image reveals the appearance of the animal’s intestinal tract in a case of neutropenic enterocolitis, or typhlitis, which had been the result of a Shigella sp. bacterial infection, known as shigellosis. Important here, was the presence of the hemorrhagic colonic mucosa, and the discolored small intestine and its mesentery, on the far left.
