This photograph, made available by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), depicts a close view of a skin lesion known as a dysplastic nevus, which exhibited a dark-brown, pebbly textured, elevated surface, surrounded by a lighter-tan, macular background. The irregular, indistinct margin of this nevus, helped to distinguish it from the small, congenital pattern-type nevus, which some dysplastic nevi closely resemble clinically. Its distinctive morphology, not its 6mm X 6mm size, identified it as a dysplastic nevus.
