This photograph, made available by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), depicts a view of a skin lesion known as a dysplastic nevus. The lesion exhibited a delicate, hazy, tan-colored macular halo, though not clinically dramatic, represented a persistent melanocytic proliferation beyond the lateral limits of the centralized mole, or papule, which would need further evaluation by a qualified dermatologist. The circular black line represented the amount of tissue to be excised as a biopsy specimen, which would be analyzed by a histopathologist in order to determine if this was a benign, or cancerous lesion.
