Caption:
This photograph, made available by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), depicts a close view of a skin lesion known as a dermal nevus, located above a patient’s left eye. A benign condition, dermal nevi are often elevated above the skin surface, and are common on the head and neck areas. Coloration may be similar to background skin color, as shown here, or may be more darkly pigmented. It is only rarely that this type of lesion evolves into a melanomatous cancer. Use of this image requires acknowledgement that NCI is the image source, as well as the inclusion of the website, www.cancer.gov.
