Caption:
This photograph, made available by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), depicts a close view of a skin lesion known as an atypical nevus. Though heterogeneously pigmented, i.e., dark brown to light brown, the lesion turned out to be benign, or noncancerous. This nevus exhibited a regular border, and was symmetrically round, which are characteristics that would initially indicate to a trained dermatologist that this is a benign lesion. Use of this image requires acknowledgement that NCI is the image source, as well as the inclusion of the website, www.cancer.gov.
