Caption:
This photograph, made available by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), depicts a close view of a skin lesion known as a pigmented nevus. This uniformly pigmented, brown papule turned out to be benign, or noncancerous, even though the lesion exhibited an irregular border, and was asymmetrical, which are characteristics that should raise the suspicion of the trained dermatologist. Use of this image requires acknowledgement that NCI is the image source, as well as the inclusion of the website, www.cancer.gov.
