Caption:
Under a magnification of 430X, this periodic acid–Schiff (PAS)-stained tissue sample, revealed the presence of a hair follicle that was included in a dermatophytic skin infection caused by the fungal organism, Trichophyton verrucosum. The hair shaft had been cut in a tangential-section, and you can see that the fungal spores were located on the exterior of the hair shaft, otherwise known as an ectothrix.
