This image depicts U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer, Nina Ahmad, as she was in the process of swabbing a boa constrictor in order to test for the presence of Salmonella Cotham, during a 2014 multistate outbreak of human Salmonella cases. Cotham is a serotype, or serovar of Salmonella enterica, which is a distinct variation within this specie of bacteria, based on the organism’s surface antigens.
