This 1969 image depicts a young child, who was a smallpox patient, and had passed through the early rash, pustular rash, and was shown here during a stage of disease process in which the scabs that had formed atop the pustules had begun to fall off. This is known as the resolving scab stage, which lasts 6-days, and during this stage, the patient is still contagious.
