This image depicts a mother caring for her bedridden child, who was drinking some water through a straw, as her mother held the glass steady. The young girl was nursing a common cold, which she ended up inadvertently passing on to her mother, who also became bedridden herself (see PHIL 18067). Note that there was a large pitcher of fresh water on her bedside table, a highly-recommended ingredient when fighting a common cold, or influenza related illness.
