Captured in 1968, this historic image depicted what was a celebration following a vaccination ceremony in the West African town of Mampong, Ghana, commemorating the administration of the 25-millionth smallpox vaccination administered in that region that had taken place during the 19-Country West African Regional Smallpox Eradication/Measles Control Program. In this particular view, the Paramount Chief was seated along with his sub-chieftains, beneath umbrellas, and a thatched covering, which had been erected on a soccer field. This image was taken just before a soccer game was to commence, followed by a celebratory dance ceremony. See PHIL 17439, 17441, 17442, and 17454, for additional views of this celebration, highlighting some of the American dignitaries who also attended this festive occasion.
