Caption:
Under a high magnification of 106,650X, this transmission electron microscopic (TEM) image reveals ultrastructural morphology exhibited by Legionella pneumophila bacteria, captured during the process of its cell division, the end result of which would produce two separate, autonomous organisms. This cell division was taking place within an alveolar macrophage. You can see the region of centralized pinching. In this field of view, you can also see three other intact organisms, as well as a lysed, disintegrating bacterium. You can also see that these organisms are enclosed by a double envelope consisting of inner, and outer, three-layer unit membranes.
