Captured during the necropsy of a rock squirrel, Spermophilus variegatus, exposure of the animal’s abdominal and thoracic viscera revealed the presence of a massive pulmonary hemorrhagic reaction, which was due to a Yersinia pestis infection, the bacteria responsible for causing plague.
