This image depicts two twin girls, who had been born to a mother that had been infected with rubella while pregnant. The girl on the right was born normal, suffering no ill effects from the rubella virus. However, the smaller sister on the left, was infected with the virus, and sustained a number of congenital birth abnormalities, including retinopathy, significant hearing loss, and accompanying heart defects. Laboratory tests confirmed that the affected twin was, indeed, infected with the rubella virus, while the healthier twin had not been infected with the virus.
