This photomicrograph, of a Gram-stained rabbit blood culture specimen, revealed the presence of numerous Gram-negative, Haemophilus ducreyi bacteria, which had gathered in a spherical clump. H. ducreyi causes chancroid, a highly contagious, sexually transmitted infection, that begins with the formation of painful open sores on the genitals.
