This illustration depicts a lateral view of a wasp that is a member of the paper wasp genus, Polistes. Members of this genus inflict stings that are quite painful, and can, in some hypersensitive individuals, lead to anaphylactic shock. You will note the needle sharp stinger located at the distal tip of its abdomen.
