This historic 1977 photograph depicts one of the steps involved in the preparation of a fecal smear sample microscope slide, colored blue by the permanent staining method implemented. At this point in the process, the act of coverslipping was being performed, whereupon, a very thin square piece of glass was being placed over the newly stained sample, atop the main glass slide. Modern day protocols call for laboratory workers, performing tasks inside the laboratory environment, to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment, including disposable latex gloves.
