Caption:
Viewed from the front, these two test tubes contained a growth medium of Sabouraud dextrose agar, that had been inoculated with the dermatophytic fungal organism, Epidermophyton floccosum. At this stage, color, and textural characteristics were developing, which would help identify this organism. Initially, from the front, as was the case here, E. floccosum colonial texture is grainy, but with maturation, they develop a more velvety appearance, and become deeply grooved. From the reverse, as is seen in PHIL 17396, these colonies exhibit the characteristic orange to brown coloration, with a yellow border.
