This 1972 photograph highlighted the scalp of a young male, Yugoslavian patient, who had exhibited symptoms of a cutaneous fungal infection known as favus, a form of tinea capitis, which had infected the scalp skin and hair follicles. Note the thinning of the hair in the area of the infection. This cutaneous illness is caused by a fungal organism known as a dermatophyte.
