This image depicts a close view of a male patient’s mouth, highlighting the presence of a primary extragenital syphilitic lesion on the right side of his lower lip. Note that the chancre appeared to exhibit a pustular surface, similar to that of a canker sore on the oral mucosa. Syphilis is caused by the bacterial spirochete, Treponema pallidum.
